The Balloon Spectacular is one of the most visually wonderful and spectator-friendly events of the year in Canberra. It's held in March as the morning weather begins to turn a little cold but the skies are bright blue and the sun is usually shining.
Spectators gather on the Patrick White lawns in front of the Old Parliament House to watch the balloons inflate and take off, while others are dotted around the shores of Lake Burley Griffin or up at the National Arboretum to see them fly or dip down to greet the kayakers and stand-up paddlers who gather in the lake to see them.
The 2021 Balloon Spectacular is the 36th one Canberra has held.
It's a haven for photographers beginner, professional and all shades in-between. I'm one of them either on the ground or occasionally in the air flying in one of the balloons.
This image of the spectators on the water waiting for the balloons to take off in front of Parliament House was taken from the lakeshore just next to the National Museum of Australia.
